In recent years, dabbing has secured a firm place in the
cannabis scene as a form of consumption. No wonder: The effect not only kicks
in lightning fast but is also significantly more intense. This makes this
method particularly exciting for experienced consumers.
If you're just starting to delve into the topic, it can initially seem quite
technical and a bit daunting. But don't worry: In this guide, we will calmly
explain what dabbing actually is and how you can safely and pleasantly enter
the world of concentrates.
What is dabbing?
The roots of dabbing trace back to the 60s and 70s, when
cannabis enthusiasts experimented with hash oil and concentrates. The practice
of dabbing, as we know it today, emerged in the early 2000s and has steadily
evolved since then.
Dabbing means nothing more than vaporizing highly concentrated cannabis
extracts – that is, not burning them, but vaporizing them at specific
temperatures. With a THC content of 90 percent, these extracts are
significantly more potent than regular cannabis flowers.
A "dab" refers to a small amount of a concentrated cannabis extract,
such as rosin, wax, or shatter, that is heated and vaporized.
Why dab at all?
You have probably heard that dabbing really hits hard... And
that's true! Due to the high THC content, they take effect faster and much more
intensely. A dab is basically the espresso shot equivalent to the traditional
joint.
But for consumers, it's not just about the potency of the effect. Many also
swear by the taste: The concentrates often bring out the flavors and terpenes
of the plant much more clearly and intensely.
Another advantage: Dabbing allows for more precise dosing. This allows for
better control of the effects and can be adjusted to personal preferences. This
is especially an advantage for medical users or experienced consumers.
What do you need to dab?
Before you can get started, you need a few special tools, as
dabbing is technically a bit more complex than the classic joint.
The basics:
• Dab Rig: A dab rig is similar in structure and function to a bong, but it is
specifically designed for vaporizing concentrates.
• Banger/Nail: The banger (or nail) is the head on the dab rig that is heated
to vaporize the concentrate.
• A dabber: The dabber is a tool used to pick up the concentrate and safely
place it in the banger.
• Torch: A torch is a Bunsen burner used to heat the banger to the right
temperature (a regular lighter is not sufficient)
Alternatively, you can also use a vaporizer or vape pen for dabbing. This
option is often easier and more discreet.
Bonus tools:
• E-nails: E-nails maintain a constant temperature, ensuring
even hits and better flavor.
• Terp Pearls: Terp Pearls are small, heat-resistant balls that can be placed
in the banger. They ensure that the concentrate distributes evenly and vaporizes
better.
• Carb Cap: The carb cap acts like a lid for the banger,
keeping the vapor in the system longer, improving heat distribution, and
protecting against splashes.
How to dab? A guide
1. Preparation is everything
Prepare everything you need: concentrate, rig, banger, dabber tool, butane
torch (and, if possible, a temperature gun and carb cap). Make sure your dab
rig is clean and filled with some water.
2. Prepare the dose
The right amount is very individual and depends on your tolerance and the
concentrate. A common standard dose is about 0.1 g. But especially the first
time, the rule is: Less is more! Concentrates are extremely potent, so start
with a small amount and gradually increase it.
3. Heat the banger
Heat the banger with the butane torch for about 45–60 seconds. For hash or
kief, a temperature of 220°C is ideal, and for BHO, around 260°C is ideal.
Make sure to heat only the banger – not the glass of the rig.
4. Apply and inhale the dab
Carefully place the concentrate in the banger with the dabber. If necessary,
place the carb cap on to retain heat and optimize vaporization. Inhale slowly
and evenly through the mouthpiece.
5. Enjoy
Hold the vapor briefly in your lungs, enjoy the taste... and then: exhale,
relax, and enjoy.
Ready to dab?
Dabbing offers a unique and intense method of consuming cannabis. It is
significantly more potent, more refined in flavor, and technically more
demanding than the classic joint. Those who embrace it can discover a whole new
side of our favorite plant. It's important to start small, take your time to
experiment, and pay attention to the quality of equipment and concentrates.
With the right technique, some caution, and curiosity, dabbing can not only be
safe but also incredibly rewarding. We wish you lots of fun trying it out and a
safe, relaxed high!
