Vaping Made Easy!
More and more people are using a vaporizer to consume cannabis. This is partly because inhaling the vapor allows significantly more of the herb’s active compounds to be absorbed into the bloodstream. While only about one-ninth of the cannabinoids end up in the bloodstream when cannabis is ingested orally, inhalation can deliver up to one-third! Plus, vaping is less harmful to your body. This is because smoking introduces toxic substances into the body, whereas vaporizing does not produce them. Smoking cannabis leaves a strong odor in your home. With vaporizing, on the other hand, you don’t have to worry about a lingering smell. What’s particularly important for medical cannabis use is that the active compounds enter the bloodstream quickly, leading to a rapid onset of effects. This has two advantages: First, pain can be relieved more quickly, and second, dosing is easier because you can gradually work your way up to the recommended dose.
But when it comes to vaping, some people are understandably overwhelmed. After all, adjusting the temperature, in particular, is a science in itself.
But let’s start from the beginning:
If you don’t have pre-ground cannabis but rather whole cannabis flowers, you’ll need to grind them first. Grinders work very well for this. (Pro tip: If you put the flowers in the freezer for a short while before grinding, the result will be even better!) You shouldn’t grind your herb too finely, otherwise the small crumbs could end up in your mouth through the screen when you inhale. However, if your herb is too coarse, the airflow might not be able to extract all the active compounds from it. You can also use a water filter, which filters the vapor through water and removes fine suspended particles.
Once your herb is ground, you can fill the chamber of your vaporizer with it. Please make sure, however, not to overfill the chamber. The airflow should be able to circulate through the herbs well so that the active ingredients are released evenly.
And now the fun really begins!
Turn on your vaporizer and set the desired temperature. Depending on the vaporizer, the temperature will be displayed differently. Many vaporizers use LED indicators, others vibrate, and still others use an app to let you know when your desired temperature has been reached.
But the way you set the temperature also varies from vaporizer to vaporizer. Some have a few preset temperatures to choose from. However, there are also vaporizers that let you freely set the desired temperature to the exact degree. Before you buy a vaporizer, you should therefore be clear on how you want to use it: For example, it makes more sense to choose a vaporizer with customizable settings or multiple temperature levels if you want to vaporize specific active compounds from cannabis—whether for medical or other reasons!
Has your vaporizer reached the desired temperature? – Great, then you’re ready to go:
Take a steady 5–10-second puff on the mouthpiece and inhale the vapor. The longer you hold the vapor in your lungs, the stronger the effect will be. With a little experience, you’ll figure out what the most comfortable draw and inhalation duration is for you. It’s quite possible that the vapor coming from your vaporizer isn’t very strong. But you don’t need to worry about that—it’s normal and depends on several factors, such as the moisture content of the herb. The higher the temperature, the more vapor is produced. At low temperatures, however, the flavor is better. When no more vapor is produced, most of the active compounds in your herb have been vaporized. After one or two sessions, you should stir the herbs in the heating chamber a bit so they heat evenly. By the way, herbs that have already been vaporized are dark brownish in color and are called ABV (“Already Been Vaped”). Since ABV still contains traces of cannabinoids, you can use it for cooking, baking, or to make a so-called “ABV joint.”
The thing about temperature…
As we’ve already noted, the various active compounds in cannabis vaporize at different temperatures. The cannabinoids CBD and THC aren’t present in their active forms in your weed. Warning, this is about to get a little technical: The hemp plant contains the carboxylic acids THC-A and CBD-A. For these to turn into our beloved THC and CBD, decarboxylation must take place. During this process, a carbon dioxide molecule is “stolen” from each carboxylic acid, leaving behind the compounds THC and CBD. Decarboxylation is triggered by heat. If you want to vaporize specific active compounds to achieve their intended effects, you need to understand the temperatures involved. With all these active compounds, temperatures, and effects, it’s easy to lose track of things. But that’s why you have us! We’ve put together a quick overview for you:
