What are vaporizers?
Vaporizers, also known as vape or vaporators, are devices that vaporize substances rather than burning them. They therefore offer a gentler alternative to traditional smoking.
Instead of burning the herbs, a vaporizer precisly heats them. This produces a pure, low-toxic vapor that perfectly releases the plant’s valuable active ingredients and terpenes.
What are the benefits of vaporizing?
During vaporization, the substances release their active ingredients without emitting the harmful substances that are otherwise produced during combustion. For this reason, vaporizers are also used in medicine as inhalers.
Another advantage is that vaporizing is odorless. The telltale smell produced when THC is burned does not occur when using a vaporizer. They can therefore be used discreetly anywhere and are ideal, for example, for smoking weed on the go or in rental apartments.
In addition, vaporizers are also attractive to non-smokers, as they do not require tobacco.
What types of vaporizers are there?
There are two classes of vaporizers:
· Portable vaporizers: These compact devices fit in any pants pocket. Equipped with powerful rechargeable batteries, they’re ideal for on the go. Modern features like USB-C fast charging, OLED displays, and haptic feedback make everyday use a breeze
· Desktop vaporizers: These powerhouses are designed for stationary use at home. They plug directly into an outlet and offer unbeatable heating power. The vapor is usually inhaled through a medical tubing or a balloon system. These vaporizers are perfect for extended sessions alone or with friends.
· Mechanical Vaporizers: Vaporizers that work entirely without electricity and can be heated from the outside with a lighter.
How does a vaporizer work?
Electronic vaporizers use two different technical methods for vaporization:
· Conduction
In conduction, the heating element on which the plant material or dab rests is heated.
· Convection
In convection, the plant material or dab is vaporized by the flow of hot air.
· Hybrid systems
Devices that combine both methods are called hybrids.
The conduction method is technically simpler, which is why these devices are slightly less expensive. However, there is a risk that parts of the plant will burn, which negates the vaporizer’s main advantage: preventing the release of oxidative pollutants. For this reason, convection vaporizers are more popular.
What’s the best way to clean a vaporizer?
To ensure your vaporizer delivers top-notch performance for years to come, cleaning is essential. Resin and plant residue in the herb chamber or mouthpiece can block the airflow and distort the flavor.
The screens and chamber should therefore be cleaned regularly with a little isopropyl alcohol and a brush.
What materials can be vaporized?
For cannabis users, it’s important to know which devices are suitable for vaporizing which materials. Almost all vaporizers have chambers designed for plant material and are therefore suitable for cannabis in its unprocessed form.
To vaporize dabs, some manufacturers offer drip pads. These are round discs made of steel wool that prevent oil or wax from damaging the heating coil or clogging the airways. The dab is placed on these pads and can then be inhaled. Vaporizing hash is significantly more difficult.
However, both the herb chambers and the drip pads become clogged with resin and are rendered unusable afterward.
Resourceful users have identified degummed hemp wool as a solution to this problem. You can place the hemp wool on the drip pad to prevent resin from seeping into the metal, or line the chamber with the hemp wool and then spread the crumbled resin over it. This is a bit fiddly, but it’s currently the only, and therefore the best, solution.
A whole new generation of vaporizers is also equipped with a tank for vaporizing e-liquids, allowing the vaporizer to function as an e-cigarette.
Vaporizers for Cannabis Patients
For cannabis patients, electronic vaporizers that can be precisely adjusted, are indispensable.
Cannabis sativa contains 113 different cannabinoids, which are classified into twelve different groups (THC, CBD, CBE, etc.). Psychoactive cannabinoids are in the minority. The majority of the active compounds have other properties that are important for patients. They have antispasmodic, analgesic, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. To release these medically relevant cannabis compounds, vaporization must occur within a precisely defined temperature range. This is only possible with electronic vaporizers that can be adjusted to the exact degree.
Tips and Tricks for Using a Vaporizer
It helps to grind the herbs evenly in a grinder before use. This allows the hot air to flow through the material optimally.
Fill the herb chamber loosely and do not overfill it. The material should be lightly packed but not compressed so that air can circulate freely.
Use fresh herbs, not too damp or bone-dry, for the best vapor production.
Start at a lower temperature (about 180 °C) for the best flavor, and work your way up to 200 °C or higher if needed to fully release the active compounds.
In addition, you can vaporize medicinal herbs and tea in a vaporizer. This is because vaporizers aren’t just suitable for inhaling active compounds from the cannabis plant.
The field of phyto (plant) inhalation covers a broad spectrum. Many well-known medicinal herbs are significantly more effective when used in a vaporizer than when consumed in traditional ways (as an infusion or dissolved in oil). For example, green tea (Sencha) smoked in a vaporizer has a much more invigorating effect than coffee or espresso at a highway rest stop.
